What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on balancing out the body and controlling the movement by recruiting the right muscles. The pilates system consists of a sequence of exercises executed using various equipment. It is built around a few core principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, breathing and flow of movement and it is essentially the optimization of movement. To gain or regain control of our bodies, so we can achieve optimal efficiency of movement, not only during our practice but also in everyday life.

Is Pilates like Yoga?

Pilates is not yoga, but they share some similarity regarding the mind body connection. The mind body connection is important, because we need to be focused on how our body feels while going through the motions. Does it feel good? Do I feel different performing the exercise on the left side comparing to the right?

A good mind body connection is necessary for any kind of exercise, however it is mainly Pilates and Yoga that emphasize this. Which is why these two are often thought to be the same. However, Pilates has a set order of exercises that are executed for a certain number of repetitions. The more you progress, the more exercises get added and the more you get to play with different variations, accessories or equipment. Aside from mat exercises, we also practice on reformer, cadillac, chair and barrel.

What do I need to bring?

  • Mat for group classes

  • Grip socks (optional)

  • Water bottle

  • Towel (recommended for poppilates)

  • A good mood

All in studio pilates equipment gets sanitized after every use. In general we practice without socks (to have better grip), but if you are not comfortable barefoot we advise you to bring grip socks. You may also like to bring a water bottle. A towel may come in handy if you tend to sweat a lot, especially for Poppilates.

For all group classes bring your own mat. For poppilates a yoga mat works fine, for classical pilates a mat of about 1 to 2 cm's thick is more comfortable for rolling exercises.

What do I need to wear?

Full range of motion is essential. Try to wear something that won't restrict your movement. Leggings and a form fitting top would be optimal, because this allows your instructor to be able to better evaluate your body during movement. Try to avoid any thick seams or clasps on your spine because these can be painful in rolling exercises.

Is Pilates just for women?

No, Pilates is not just for women. Pilates was invented for men by Joseph Pilates. It just so happens that over time more and more women ended up practicing Pilates. Here are a few examples of professional male athletes who practice Pilates: soccer players Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, basketball player Lebron James, top ironman Kendrick Louis, golfer Tiger Woods and tennis player Andy Murray. More and more pro athletes are learning that Pilates is a great addition to their workout routine because it also works the smaller muscle groups that are vital for spinal support, posture and balance between both sides of the body.

Who is Pilates for?

Pilates is for every body. That's right, not just everybody, but every body. It does not matter if you are young, old, flexible, inflexible, perfectly healthy or have a few little defects like back, knee, hip, shoulder issues and so on. Regarding that you have clearance from your doctor and are allowed to work out, Pilates can be modified to fit your needs. This is why in a lot of cases Pilates can be a great rehabilitation method. As teachers, we focus on the body we have in front of us and adjust whenever necessary. However if your body has special requirements, it might be wise to start out with a few private sessions, so your teacher can guide you through the exercises and teach you how to move safely before attempting any group classes.

Do I need to be flexible to do Pilates?

As mentioned before, Pilates is for everybody. You do not need to be flexible to start, you just need to have a body. Flexibility is acquired by regular practice.

Who is Poppilates for?

Poppilates is a mix of pilates and fitness exercises set to pop music. It's a 50 minute session with cardio. As with classical pilates, exercises can be adjusted according to the level of the client, but personally I advise people with injuries not to parttake in this, because it is very tempting to follow the tempo of the music and go beyond your limits. For people with specific health issues, I would advise classical pilates.

Will I lose weight by doing Pilates?

Pilates is not a full-on cardio class like spinning for instance. Pilates will improve your cardio-vascular health, but it is not heavy cardio. The first thing you need to analyze when wanting to lose weight is your diet. Will Pilates help you get a healthier, stronger body, if you eat right, practice regularly (at least 3x a week) and incorporate some cardio like running, swimming or riding a bike into your routine? Yes, but your eating pattern should always be your main priority.

Do you provide meal plans?

The purpose of a nutrition coach is to help you create and maintain a healthy lifestyle. To determine your goals and your challenges with you and create a plan of action to help you reach your goals. To educate you and guide you on your way to better habits. Weekly follow up ensures you stay on track. Teamwork makes the dream work.

If a ready made mealplan is what you are after. I advise you to consult a dietician.
